New BBC show, Sherlock, retells the Sherlock Holmes stories in the modern world, as if Sherlock never existed in the Victorian era (so it's not that these guys are coincidentally Sherlock's great great grand children or something). It's written by one of the guys who wrote on Doctor Who and Torchwood, it's not exactly the same style but there are a lot of similarities. Sherlock Holmes is an extremely intelligent, high functioning sociopath, and Dr John Watson is a guy recently returned from Afghanistan. They're thrust together as room mates in the middle of a case Sherlock is desperate to get in on (he does it for free it seems, which creeps all the police out a lot, they all think he's insane) and Sherlock pulls Watson into it as his assistant within about 10 seconds. It feels a lot like Doctor Who but with no aliens. Similar amounts of running and Companionship lol.
It's awesome. I found a stream for the first episode.

I'm loving this series. I didn't think I would because I'm always a bit wary of modern takes on classic literature (or anything else for that matter) but this works brilliantly. I love the dynamic between Holmes and Watson; Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were really good choices for the characters. It does have an extreme Dr Who vibe to it, yeah, probably helped by the fact that Stephen Moffat is involved in both, and Mark Gatiss is too

What are 'those sorts' of shows Fletch? I ask because I might have misrepresented it. I got to see the second episode today and it's pure brilliance!

It was indeed ;D I missed the detective played by Rupert Graves though, he was good in the first episode. Hopefully he turns up again in the third!

Will there only be a few episodes?
I hope so too.

There are only three episodes, but I read somewhere (I can't find where now!) that the BBC wants to commission another series so fingers crossed that'll happen. It's too good a concept not to do more with, really. Three episodes just isn't enough for me

No it is really really not. I hope more will be made! I guess it's like Foyles War, there are only a few of those a season because of how long the episodes are.

Yeah, there are a few other shows like that as well. Whitechapel was the same (3-part mini series), and that was really quite brilliant (and funnily enough featured Phil Davis, who was in the first episode of Sherlock It also featured Steve Pemberton who is one of the League of Gentlemen, just like Mark Gatiss (who co-created Sherlock) is - I love how closely related all of these things can be sometimes.)

channelnine.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=852242Huzzah Lord knows when, not that it matters to me since I have it on DVD now ;D (and I still think the ABC should have claimed it so that it could be on at a good time and ad-free, but meh, watcha gonna do?)

I did a Google search and all it said was that it will be airing late 2010 on Channel 9.

Hah, "late 2010" It would be nice if they could be a bit more specific with that.

Hmm... Well it only lasts for three 90 minute episodes so I wonder if it might be put on at an 8:30 timeslot or something. Ah well! I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Nope, only 3 episodes, but as I say, they go for 90 minutes each which is about movie-length. British series only tend to be small anyway (most of them only run for about 6-8 episodes a series, some might go for more depending on how many they've been contracted for though).
There is going to be more Sherlock though, so I can't wait for that! ;D

Yes'm! It's received quite a lot of praise from a lot of people so there's definitely a demand for it.

I think it's going to be a fantastic series, however I think it's going to be like Foyles War, in that there'll probably be four episodes a year or something like that.
