Two for the road: Henry Mancini
Where : Dunstan Playhouse, Friday-Sunday Reviwer: Tim Lloyd
To be good, kitsch has to be exquisite. Henry Mancini, for example, is right in the sweet spot of middle of the road music, from themes for Pink Panther to Peter Gunn and the adornment of some of the great movies of the '60s, at least. In 'Two For The Road' we have four uncertain singers and a band of uneven capabilities trying to deliver music that is imprinted on the souls of most in the audience. It called for wild interpretations, clever staging and when all else failed, over the top comedy. But these performers actually love Mancini and in their dumb devotion they truly, innocently, mess up some of the great golden moments of Hollywood music making. Kaye Tuckerman, through sheer physical vibrancy, adds some gloss to the show, but this was a forgettable evening out.
And then there's a photo of Colin Lane, Julia Zemiro, Kaye Tuckerman and Dale Pengelly.
