Flying Solo - You loved Lano and Woodley and now you'll love Woodley when he gets Possessed at Fringe
Frank Woodley is not one to be quiet. And as one of Australia's top comedians he's also not the type to resort to weird, heavy breathing phone calls to get attention. So why is he on the end of the phone line in silence?
"Hello? Oh, you are there," he says. "That could have gone on for hours. I'm house sitting at the moment and I just answered the phone before and it kept ringing an I couldn't work out how to answer it, so I had a mental breakdown and just yelled 'how do I answer this phone?" then I heard Hannah (his publicist) say, "you've answered it, you've answered it"."
It seems the man who could sell out huge theatres as one half of the much loved duo Lano and Woodley can't answer phones so well. He's probably also not the best house sitter, he's not sure whether he left a noticeable saucepan burn on his mate's benchtop. Never mind. Woodley can still make audiences laugh themselves silly with the solo comedic shows he has played since we said goodbye to Lano and Woodley last year.
Woodley's debut solo show "The Happy Dickwit" triumphed at the Melbourne comedy festival. His new show, Possessed, will premiere at the Fringe. Inspired by silent movie heroes, such as Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and Jacques Tati, Possessed is a hilariously physical, bittersweet love story.
It is brought to life with the help of director Kate Denborough and musician Paul Mac. Mac has created a score that's left Woodley feeling a bit rock'n'roll. "I've started throwing televisions out hotel windows an all that kind of stuff."
Sounds like Woodley's life is coming along swimmingly since the other half of Lano and Woodley, Colin Lane, stopped bashing him about the head with saucepans and the like. Ask Woodley how Lano's going an it's just like the old days. "Me and Col and dinner on Saturday. Not together, but it's a start. You've got to eat."
