Can I just say, as a on-again-off-again member, that having threads with numerous pages can make it *difficult* to get back into the swing of things here? This has the makings of a really good board, but when a newbie (or relative newbie) has to wade through 15 or 20 pages of one thread that goes all over the place, it can be a bit... well, tedious. I'm an active member of other boards where they have lots and lots of threads - and it is not AT ALL confusing. I really don't see how it would be. For example, one of the boards has a section for "Impersonal" stuff - by which I mean like what's in the news and stuff. And another section for "Personal" stuff - by which I mean stuff that happens directly to you or around you, with your friends and family and kids and pets. If I'm interested in seeing what's going on in the great Paris Hilton saga (...not that I am... >_>), I know to go to Impersonal, and I know there will be threads with plenty of different titles about different news stories and entertainment stories. If I went to the Impersonal section and there was just one thread that said "what's in the news today" - I would have to crawl through so much OTHER news before I got to what I want to find.
Or think about this: I work in a law firm (unfortunately I'm not pulling down a lawyer's salary...!). When a lawyer or paralegal is putting together their papers for a case, they will put each of the witnesses into separate files, or separate sections. It's no good having a file that says "Witnesses" because each witness has something different to say about a different part of the case. It is messy and unprofessional to go wading through one big file to find one document from one witness, when separating the witnesses into their own files would make the process SO MUCH EASIER. Plus, it would make it easier for someone not familiar with the case to find what they're looking for.
Basically, being organised, orderly and specific in a thread isn't about making life boring. It's about making life more accessible to more people.
I really like nyranda's competition idea, and have put links in my sigs on other boards. Because I know L&W are hilarious, and the more people exposed to them, the better, right!! But for people to come to this board - and to *stay* - they need to feel welcome. And having massive threads that wander all over the shop makes it hard for people to feel welcome. This is me speaking from my own experience.
